Machu Picchu in South America, arguably one of the most renowned sites globally, is truly unique. Originally an Inca citadel constructed around the 1450s, it is often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas.” Located approximately 50 miles from Cusco, the journey to Machu Picchu involves taking a train to Aguas Calientes, followed by a bus ride to the site. Visitors must be accompanied by a tour guide, so it’s essential to book in advance. “Elisban Huarancca notes, “You can visit Machu Picchu year-round, as various climatic conditions enhance the mysterious nature of the site.” However, if you wish to avoid the rainy season, he suggests planning your trip between April and the end of October.
Jardín is a charming town located a few hours south of Medellín, known for its colonial architecture, stunning landscapes, and numerous activities. During my visit, I stayed at Creo Ecolodge, where Castro provided many great recommendations. You can tour Cueva del Esplendor, a “Cave of Splendor” featuring a beautiful waterfall, or visit a nearby coffee farm to learn about Colombian coffee production. My favorite spot for coffee was Cafe Historias, which serves some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. According to Castro, the ideal time to visit is in August and September when the town is less crowded, and the annual Jardín Film Festival in South America takes place. She also notes that the town gets much busier from December through April.
Buenos Aires in South America is one of my favorite cities in the world, offering everything from tango shows and street art to the best steak you’ll ever taste. Each neighborhood has its own unique charm. In La Boca, you’ll find vibrant street murals, while Recoleta is home to the famous cemetery. Don’t miss the chance to visit a speakeasy in Palermo. With so many fantastic activities, Buenos Aires serves as a perfect home base for exploring more of Argentina. Additionally, the city’s rich cultural scene includes world-class museums like the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the MALBA, which showcase both classical and contemporary art. Food lovers will delight in the city’s diverse culinary offerings, from traditional parrillas to trendy cafes and international cuisine. For a taste of local life, visit the bustling markets of San Telmo and Mataderos, where you can shop for antiques, handmade crafts, and sample local delicacies.
Less than a two-hour drive from Santiago, this unique coastal city was once the residence of 20th-century poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda. Valparaíso is known for its vibrant, colorful hillside houses, historic funiculars, and expansive ocean views. Additionally, it’s next to Viña del Mar in South America, which boasts some of Chile’s best beaches.
